Don’t be afraid, Obama goes skeet shooting “all the time”

Obama was asked in a recent interview by The National Review if he’s ever fired a gun. Obama said, “Up in Camp David they go skeet shooting all the time.” We can suppose that’s in between golf games.

obama_winksObama goes on to say that he respects the American tradition of hunting when ten-year-olds were given a hunting rifle and went out with dad and the uncles for the day, and which became a family tradition. Obama is mistaken to relegate the American tradition of gun ownership to hunting by only boys and men — he left out half the population, girls and women.

I wasn’t 10, but 12 years old when my dad decided it was time for me to learn how to shoot a .22-rifle and it wasn’t for hunting purposes. My dad didn’t hunt, but he said, “Every girl should know how to shoot at least a .22 rifle.”

So my shooting lessons went on for days until I could finally hit the target to my dad’s satisfaction. I remember the day I hit the target consecutively. He turned to me, smiled and nodded, “that’s good.” I was relieved knowing I had finally passed. Now I could get back to what was previously pre-occupying my 12-year-old mind. Decades have gone by, but today I treasure those memories out in the field with my dad teaching me how to shoot a .22 rifle.

.22 caliber rifle, or pistol, may not be the best choice as a home defense weapon to stop an attacker, although more people probably have been killed by .22’s than any other caliber, as the bullets are deadly. When a person is shot with a .22, the bullet does not leave the body, but ricochets within causing severe organ damage leading to death. ER doctors say these are the worst gunshot wounds to treat. A person is more likely to survive being shot with a .9 caliber since the bullet is heavier, it will tend either to go straight through the body, or become lodged.

Regardless of gun type or caliber, the main point is the reason for law-abiding American citizens to own guns. If not for hunting, or self-defense and home protection, then the main reason is to defend against a tyrannical government. It’s our right under the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The text of the 2nd Amendment reads:

A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The Democrats have been gunning (pun intended) for a gun ban since the Brady Bill. Senator Diane Feinstein’s (D-CA) proposed bill is to ban over 150 differing types of firearms. It’s unlikely the bill will pass, but it does force the issue of defending the 2nd Amendment right. Rather than proposing legislation that will bring about gun reform that would be more likely to pass the Senate and the House, the Democrats have basically shot themselves in the foot, or more likely, committed suicide, which might be a good thing for 2nd Amendment supporters.

The recent shooting massacres disturb me, as I’m sure it does most Americans. It’s appalling to see innocent lives, especially young lives, taken for no apparent reason. Senseless violence has no place in a civilized society, yet the city of Chicago experienced the same number of deaths by gun shootings as Sandy Hook Elementary, 26 people were killed, and all within the first 16 days of January. By the end of the year, there will be 20 Sandy Hook-sized massacres in Chicago alone.

At the same time, the politicians in Washington, far removed from the realities of gang violence in inner cities, determine to take away, or infringe on the 2nd Amendment right for law-abiding American citizens to bear firearms. Our founding framers wrote that right shall not be infringed. I’m afraid Senator Feinstein may have picked her battle unwisely. Perhaps the real reason behind Feinstein’s gun ban is not to stop gun violence by criminals, but out of fear of what is inherent in the 2nd Amendment — the design for a militia of American citizens to secure a free state and to protect themselves against a tyrannical government.

Recently reported in the New York Post, rifle-owners respond with “Molon labe” to Governor Cuomo’s new law mandating they register their “assault rifles” with their state. There are about 1 million semiautomatic rifles owners, and officials worry those owners will not comply. Brian Olesen, president of the American Shooters Supply, one of the largest gun dealers in New York state, said that “hundreds will defy the law.” Civil disobedience is and has been the American patriot’s mainstay to fight unjust laws.

Just because Obama goes skeet shooting and feigns an understanding of American hunting traditions doesn’t soften the blow of the Democrats’ gun grab. It’s fairly safe to say that it’s obvious what the Democrats are trying to do: disarm Americans, if not by banning all guns, then by making gun ownership onerous with stiff regulations, taxes, fines and threat of imprisonment for non-compliance.

If we the people don’t push back, the freedom will soon be gone when a dad can teach his daughter how to shoot a .22 rifle, and we effectively become slaves to a tyrannical, dictatorship government. We can’t let that happen.

  1. Very good article and every word and point is spot on and hits the Target Square in the Bulls Eye, Pun Intended. Thanks–Jerome Ennis

  2. The Good Old Days are Gone, and I and millions more Americans long for those days to be restored. More and more young to middle aged parents have had the good sense and moral judgment to remove their children from the cespools, we now pass of as Public Schools, and are homeschooling their children and bringing up their children in what used to be in the American Tradition where work ethic was developed, respect for self, for others and for resources were instilled, a love of God, Family and Country in that order were developed, and their public schools were Locally Controlled and taught and instilled these same values, as well as teaching them the 5 R’s: Reading wRithing, aRithmetic, Respect and Resposibility and prepared them to be responsible citizens with the academic skills and knowledge to pursue life whether in trades, manufacturing, the military, College Careers, Trade Schools, etc. In short, kids were Educated in the Academic Skill Areas necessary to pursue higher education or if they chose to go to work and start career. And, we also had a good understanding of our country’s history, the constitution, of economics and most importantly Loyalty and Patrotism and Respect for Our Nation which we learned was the Best, Most Prosperous, and Moste Generous Nation in the History of the World. Sadly and coincidently the same year that I graduated high school in 1966 was the year LBJ began the takeover of Public Schools and started the Erosion of Local and State Control, and today in 2013, during the Obama Regime’s time in office, the public Schools are now Under Direct and Completed Control by the Federal Government, and the mandates and regulations they place on school districts all over the country. And, sadly today, the USA stands at about Number 30 in Educational Outcomes and Literacy, trailing many third world countries while spending more per pupil than all other nations, except for Belgium. In 1966, we were number 2 or 3 in the world for public school outcomes and national literacy, and schools were totally a reflection of the community in which the children lived.

As for guns, we all learned how to shoot guns starting with BB guns, later a 22 caliber rifle, then maybe a 410, 20, or 16 gage shotgun, and no permits or registrations were required at age 12 or at any other age as we grew older. And, for my entire 12 years in my public school life did any kid get shot and killed in school or any place else.

In high school, the same scenario was played out all over the south, and likely all over the country in rural and suburban areas. We all had our shotguns and rifles hanging on our gun racks in pick up trucks and parked in the school parking lot and did not even lock our doors and nobody stole your property. We lived in a much better world before the Government Nanny State turned the nation into the disrespectful and ungrateful nation with no morals which we have become. There is not one single problem in the USA today that has not been created by our own government and the policies they have enacted.

  3. Jerome, thank you and also for your detailed comment — especially the focus on public schools, which I agree have become nothing less than government schools. I understand the content of textbooks for the nation are approved by a federal government committee who decides what goes in and what is left out. I agree our problems in America today are because of government interference. The first words in Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” are: “That government is best which governs least.” Conservatives take those words to heart, but the left, and Obama in particular, dismiss the idea of limited government. Obama understands American tradition comes from the U.S. Constitution; he knows that, but he is bent on destroying American tradition by yanking out the root, our 2nd Amendment right. Thanks again,
