A Season in Wait of Light

In this new painting by artist Katherine Trunk, she expresses the incongruity between the violence in Newtown, CT recently and the season of Christmas.

Trunk used the symbol of a cherub because they are in the Christmas narrative, and she wanted to show the common thread of how the children who had perished were as Angels.

The flames in the background are dual imagery — votive candles honoring the deceased, and candles awaiting the Birth of a Savior.

The figure of Santa is also included because many of the children who perished looked forward to the arrival of him, but received something far worse.

The Angel is presenting hope by extending the Santa outward.
