President Obama, the Culture King

king-obamaAmericans are fond of their celebrities. So much, as a matter of fact, that a presidential campaign utilized this knowledge towards a victorious re-election for President Barack Obama.

The President’s mantle of celebrity was burnished and repackaged  for citizen-viewer consumption as demonstrated by President Obama’s many appearances with cultural icons throughout his campaign.

Critical flashpoints flared within our nation’s history during Obama’s watch, such as the Benghazi massacre and the Fast and Furious debacle. Not missing a beat, Obama utilized his celebrity cache, making a campaign stop in Nevada less than 24 hours after the attack in Benghazi began.

Without too much outrage from a celebrity driven media, Obama adeptly choreographed fancy footwork, dancing around national tragedies.

As successful as any major ad campaign is Barack Obama’s Presidency. Popular entertainment was a useful tool in the Democratic campaign. The Latin American vote, the women’s vote and the youth vote were equivalent to an essential commodity. Celebrities such as Eva Longoria, Katy Perry and Beyoncé were deemed useful in capturing the imagination of the nation’s many anesthetized by the optics. Hip versus stodgy vied for distracted attention spans.

Societal fractures remain in the U.S. such as racial tensions, but the country has garnered a President who skillfully hawks a message without so much as offering helpful solutions. The entertainment mentality numbs the national consciousness, when events of grave proportion should register on a Richter scale. Marketed by savvy promoters, Obama’s message knew their audience.

Obama’s campaign’s prowess in data collection and analysis was a key element in its victory. ~, November 6, 2012

The entertainment industry, in my mind, has obfuscated and blurred the distinction between hard news and what used to be considered TV gossip. Many now consider both of these equally relevant and important. For the Obama, campaign this would seem to be a match made if not in Heaven, then Hollywood.  Does it surprise many that Eva Longoria was selected to co-chair Obama’s 2012 Inaugural Committee? Or that Anna Wintour is suggested to be a choice as U.S. Ambassador?

Perhaps at this point it doesn’t surprise many. Perhaps our culture needs the transformation to seek and to find values which endure.

To remember the aftermath of September 11, 2001 is to recall that our country was mobilized and united as one group. We realized  that we are stronger as a nation than what divides us.  The President has effectually driven a wedge, diminished unity among citizens and placed our country’s national interests at risk.  It seems that President Obama is our culture King, and that our anointed celebrities have helped to elevate him to the throne.
